Merge codes let you personalise an Email Template so that details like a contact's name, a property address, or your branch phone number fill in automatically when the email is sent, all without you having to retype them every time.
This article explains what merge codes are, how to insert them into an Email Template, and lists all the merge codes available for use in emails.
For how to create or edit the template itself, see Creating and editing Email Templates. For how to choose a template and send it, see Sending a Templated Email.
What are merge codes?
Merge codes are placeholders enclosed in hash symbols, for example #contact_salutation# or #branch_name#. When the email is sent, Alto replaces each merge code with the matching information from the record — such as the recipient contact or a linked property.
Note
Branch, company and negotiator merge codes are filled in for every send. Property merge codes only populate when a property is linked to the email. Contact merge codes only populate for the recipient contact.
Inserting a merge code
- Open the Email Template for editing
- Click into the text block where you want the merge code to appear
- Click Merge codes on the editor toolbar
- In the Insert merge code dialog, start typing to Search merge codes... until you find the code you need
-
Click the merge code to insert it. It appears in the template as a token,
for example
#branch_name#
Tip
Only merge codes shown in the Email Template picker are supported for these templates.
